Sotome Places associated with Father de Rotz

    A stone church built by Father de Rotz and his congregation in 1893 using the priest’s own money (National Important Cultural Property).

    Workshop facilities set up by Father de Rotz in 1883 in order to support women in becoming financially independent. A group of facilities have been designated as a National Important Cultural Property.

    A church built by Father de Rotz in 1882, with his own money, in the Shitsu and Kurosaki areas of Sotome, where there were many hidden Christians (National Important Cultural Property).

  • Nagasaki’s Confucious shrine (Nagasaki Koshibyo) and Historical Museum of China

    Constructed in 1893 by the Chinese Qing dynasty government and overseas Chinese merchants, the Confucious shrine contains many Confucian artifacts. In the Historical Museum of China there are exhibits including cultural assets from the court of the Beijing Palace museum.

Nagasaki A journey in search of martyrs and believers

    Urakami Cathedral was constructed in 1914, damaged by the atomic bomb, and then rebuilt in 1959. Along the route to the cathedral there are stone statues, etc., that are remnants from the bombing.

  • Twenty-six Martyrs Museum and the site of their martyrdom

    A museum built on the site where six foreign missionaries and twenty Japanese believers were martyred in 1597. The exhibits tell the story of Christian belief in this region. (Designated as a pilgrimage site by the Vatican).

    Nagasaki’s chinatown is as famous as those in Yokohama and Kobe. There are about 40 chinese restaurants, chinese sweet shops and chinese goods shops all lined up along the street.

    Completed in 1865, this is currently the oldest church in Japan. It offers the chance to catch a glimpse of a medieval european gothic building.

    Made up of 6 restored and reconstructed Meiji period western style houses that existed in various locations within the city. It is popular not only for this, but also as a spot with a view of both Nagasaki city and Nagasaki harbor.

Hirado An island where faith took root

    A brick church built in 1898 by a shrine carpenter from Ukushima who was baptized on Kuroshima. It is notable for the verandas along both sides, a feature not found in other churches.

    A church built in 1929 in Romanesque style by Yosuke Tetsukawa. The décor, which employs floral motifs and stained glass, is worth seeing.

    Almost the entire population of the Neshiko domain became Christians, and the town produced many martyrs. The museum introduces the history of the hidden Christians and their faith.

    A church dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, built in 1931, after the edict banning Christianity had been lifted and believers had come to live in the area.

    The exhibits inside the castle include various cultural properties. This is also a popular scenic spot.

    A building constructed in 1893 as the residence of the feudal lord, Matsura. Cultural properties on display include old documents, picture scrolls, and armor.
